Pump & Compact Container
Designed to work in harmony with the CO.8 Custom Cosmetic Creator, the CO.8 Pump & Compact Container system brings precision, convenience, and style to every step of a user’s makeup routine.​ Another ingenious idea from our clients, this project began with the recognition of a need for an airless container system that could keep custom cosmetics fresher for longer. At Unbox Product Design, our role was to unpack that concept and develop innovative solutions to meet the challenge.

Together, we created CO.8’s Pump and Compact Containers — products that not only preserve formulas effectively but also reduce waste. The system combines durable, reusable components with consumable parts made from biodegradable bioplastic, helping to minimize environmental impact.

Each device represents a feat of product engineering, designed to deliver precise quantities in a convenient, mess-free, compact, and portable form. With the user experience at the center of our industrial design process, we developed devices that feel both innovative and familiar — addressing everyday needs such as secure locking, an integrated mirror, applicator brush, palette dish, ergonomic comfort, and more.
bACKGROUND
In pursuit of personalized beauty, where users take full control of their formulas, CO.8 reimagined how cosmetics are created and experienced at home. The Pump and Compact Container are made from this vision of customization, reflecting through how the product is dispensed, stored, and used. As accessories to the CO.8 device, they reflect the same precision, elegance, and user-first philosophy, turning functional tools into beautiful extensions of the experience.
Design for Manufacturing (Dfm)
From the earliest stages, every component was designed with manufacturability in mind. At Unbox Product Design, we focus on the granular details of each part and component to ensure cost-effective production. We work diligently to design for assembly, reducing part count, utilizing standardized or off-the-shelf components, integrating draft angles, minimizing undercuts, maintaining consistent wall thickness, running simulation analyses, and more.
This effort not only ensures that our products can be efficiently manufactured but also reduces costs and complexities, increases profitability, reliability, and usability, and ultimately enhances the overall user experience.
Visualization
Every detail of CO.8 was designed with intention—just as every step in the product development process was carefully planned in advance. Well before the products reached the market, we began creating valuable brand assets, including photorealistic renderings and animations. These assets not only serve as tools for evaluation and communication but, more importantly, function as powerful marketing content used across websites, materials, and campaigns.
By producing such stunning visuals early in the process, we accelerate the time to market, reduce development costs, and build a strong, cohesive brand identity that excites consumers and inspires anticipation.
pROTOTYPING
Using the latest rapid prototyping technologies and processes—including 3D printing, CNC machining, and vacuum casting- we build, test, and refine designs through an iterative development cycle. Each prototype is carefully assembled and evaluated to ensure optimal fluid dynamics, airtight sealing, usability, part construction, and precise fit. At every stage, we refine tolerances, improve mechanical performance, and validate part designs.
Beyond digital simulations, our prototypes undergo extensive real-world testing to dispense end ingredients, evaluate usability with third-party participants, and endure rigorous performance trials, ensuring that our designs not only look beautiful but also function flawlessly.
Engineering
The CO.8 Airless Containers are not only beautiful and user-friendly—they are feats of engineering innovation. Traditionally, airless containers have been limited to single-use, disposable consumables. At Unbox Product Design, we recognized this as an opportunity to reduce waste and create a premium product designed for reuse, easy cleaning, and long-term durability.
To achieve this, significant engineering effort went into reimagining and redesigning internal mechanisms, part construction, and the separation of reusable and single-use components. This includes the development of unique airless valve mechanisms that ensure precise dispensing, extend the formula’s shelf life, and keep ingredients fresh.
Concept Development
The Pump and Compact are more than accessories; they are integral parts of the creative experience that CO.8 brings to personalized beauty. The Pump was envisioned as a tasteful glass container designed to sit elegantly on a vanity, engineered to deliver consistent, reliable results with every use. The Compact, on the other hand, was created for on-the-go convenience, integrating essential functionality and thoughtful features without compromising portability.
